The chronic aspect of Acid Reflux Disease is a hidden danger that demands you to take the causes, symptoms, and treatments very seriously. It won’t typically disappear on its’ own so it is vital that you stay on top of treating the disease.

How do you know if it is getting more serious and the complications more dangerous? If you are having heartburn more than once or twice a week then you really need to start paying close attention and also need to consult a physician. On a side note, I am glad to see a lessening of the 7 day or 14 day advertisement that Prilosec was using when it first became available over the counter. If your symptoms are serious enough and often enough that you would need to take Prilosec or any other acid inhibitor then as harsh as this may sound, you are looking at much longer than 7 to 14 days to gain control of the disease.

As discussed previously, food and acid being pushed back into the esophagus is what the basic “definition” of acid reflux disease or GERD is. This is what gives you heartburn and cause all the other problems with acid reflux such as acid getting into your throat or bronchial tubes.

Acid Reflux is actually quite common. Many people have symptoms of acid reflux in one form or another, most commonly light bouts with heartburn. Most cases will be isolated and seldom-recurring. If however you are experiencing a consistency of an increase of attacks, this is when you really need to prepare for the possibility of the disease getting more sever or dangerous if untreated.

You need to take swift action. Other problems can arise as we have previously discussed such as Barrett’s Esophagus, which is a form of cancer. Breathing problems and ulcers can also occur. Many acid reflux prescriptions claim healing ability but that can only work for so long or for so many times.

A few more of the dangers of untreated acid reflux:

~ Inflammation of the esophagus.

~ Tooth, lung, and throat problems.

~ A narrowing esophagus which can inhibit the ability of food or drink to pass throug.

Remember that antacids only relieve existing symptoms and are in no way a long term solution. If you find it necessary to always maintain a decent supply of antacids then you really need to consider taking broader steps. And always remember that a naturaly, holistic approach is the best was to permanently defeat this disease and we will go over that in more detail soon.

Do not get down on yourself or add guilt into your “diet” when you face acid reflux and especially if your symptoms are of a more chronic nature. There is a good chance that you were bound to acquire the disease and could do little to avoid it.

In many, if not most, circumstances acid reflux is hereditary. That means you were going to experience the disease without having much control over the situation. What you must do is recognize what you did do to ease the onset along.

1. Smoking- Several doctors have told me that nicotine erodes the flap that opens to allow food to exit the esophagus into the stomach. This creates a reversal of the more common causes of reflux. Many people experience discomfort due to the flap not opening properly to allow the meal to get into the stomach. When the flap is eroded, food is not held inside the stomach. If acid reflux runs through you family history then you should especially avoid nicotine.

2. Lack of exercise- Run, walk, or do jumping jacks. Determine that daily you will do something even if it means walking around the block. When I eat something that I can tell is not setting well with me, I go outside as soon as I can and take a brisk walk. This almost without fail thwarts the oncoming acid attack.

3. Listen to your system- The vast majority of eating circumstances now are preceded by a moment of silence. No, not for the chicken of which I am about to partake, but to listen to my stomach and my system tell me what I can handle. You will know. Do NOT ignore the warning signs that you will simply KNOW are there. You will get to the point where someone will say “McDonald’s” and it will take all that you have to keep from openly cringing at the thought of the chemicals. Your body is telling you something. Listen to it.

I have already posted several articles about acid reflux and most of them have been more technical than this one. Sometimes it is nice just to have more of a fireside chat type of discussion. Acid reflux causes are really simple to understand. Chances are that you inherited the disease. The good news is that the disease is moderately harmless. Your only real long term risks are Barrett’s esophagus and a really bad attack brought on by sleeping flat.

Common sense is your best attack. Decide to use it and you will be able to talk about acid reflux causes with a smile rather than a grimace.

Have you ever wondered if those chest pains that you have been experiencing lately mean something more? Do you suddenly wake up at night because of chest pain?

Do you sometimes end up tasting acid in your mouth? If you answer yes to any or all of these questions, chances are, you could be experiencing acid reflux symptoms.

Before anything else, acid reflux, or more commonly called as heartburn, is a condition experienced by many. It is not caused by any kind of bacteria nor is it contagious.

The reason why you experience heartburn is because the gastrointestinal contents, also known as your stomach contents, back up to your esophagus.

There are a lot reasons why you end up having acid reflux or heartburn. Problems connected to the esophageal sphincter can result to this. Not sure what esophageal sphincter is?

It is the part of the esophagus that opens to let saliva and your recently chewed food into your stomach and closes to make sure that the stomach contents never go out of the organ

and into the esophagus.

When it comes to problems of the esophageal sphincter, it can be because of two things. First is that the sphincter relaxes or widens even in times when it is not supposed to.

Second is when the sphincter is unable to close properly. There are other reasons why heartburn occurs such as you having a hiatal hernia or eating spicy foods.

Suffice it to say that these causes will lead you to experience the acid reflux symptoms.

There are 4 major symptoms of acid reflux that can help you pinpoint on whether you are having heartburn or not.

~ Food or Acid Taste in the Mouth

Having the taste of food or acid in the mouth can or cannot happen simultaneously. What you should know is that if you recently ate, you could end up with tasting swallowed

food in your mouth. If it has been hours since you last ate, you could be tasting acid in your mouth.

Tasting food or acid in the mouth is one of the acid reflux symptoms. It happens because as we’ve said, in heartburn, the stomach contents back up to the esophagus.

With this, whatever is contained in your stomach will get back to your esophagus making you taste it in your mouth.

~ Burning Sensation at the Back of the Throat

You experience this symptom simply because of the acid touching the back of your throat. This could be experienced while you are swallowing food or saliva or not swallowing anything.

~ Difficulty in Swallowing

Of the acid reflux symptoms, this is the one that often causes concern. Usually associated with swallowing considerable amounts of food at the same time, you experience

difficulties in swallowing because the stomach contents are also backing up to your esophagus. As a result, both your swallowed food and the stomach contents are pushing

each other making it almost difficult to swallow.

~ Intestinal Problems

Of all the acid reflux symptoms, this is the one that causes embarrassment. Why? When you have intestinal problems connected to heartburn, you end up burping or belching a lot.

Aside from these, you will also have a noisy stomach and frequent passing of gas.
